Pops Series Shows Orchestra’s Diversity

The Music of Bowie and Prince, A Swingin’ Holiday and The Speedbumps are all on the schedule for the Canton Symphony Orchestra’s (CSO) 2016-17 Pops Series.  Single tickets as well as subscriptions for this genre spanning series are available now.

“The Pops series gives our musicians a wonderful opportunity to showcase their talents in different ways,” notes Michelle Mullaly, President and CEO of the orchestra.  “It is also a great opportunity for our audience to enjoy some of their favorite music with an orchestral twist.”

The orchestra ventures into the pop/rock arena with The Music of Bowie and Prince (sponsored in part by News-Talk 1480, Mix 94.1, and in memory of William G. Burkhardt) on November 10 at 8pm in Umstattd Performing Arts Hall.  The concert features a band from Jeans ‘n Classics that includes electric guitar, bass, drums and of course vocals.

On December 4 at 3pm at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall, the orchestra steps into the jazz era with A Swingin’ Holiday.  The concert features new arrangements, created by local musician Kevin Martinez, of holiday favorites with a combined chorus of the Canton Symphony Chorus, and choirs from Perry and McKinley high school.  Soprano, Joan Ellison adds her vintage vocal style to the mix.  And if that weren’t enough, the GlenOak Jazz Band will join in on the festive concert.

Making a return collaboration with the CSO is local folk band The Speedbumps.  They will perform some of their previous hits as well as songs from their new album with the orchestra on February 11 at 8pm at The Canton Palace Theatre.

Subscriptions for the three-concert Pops Series range in price from $50-$80.  Single tickets range in price from $25-$30.  Subscriptions and single tickets are available online at www.cantonsymphony.org, by phone at 330-452-2094 or in person at the Canton Symphony Orchestra administrative offices in the Zimmermann Symphony Center at 2331 17th Street NW in Canton weekdays 9am-5pm.
