Pawsitive Ohio Presents “SHAKE! Art Unleashed”

Pawsitive Ohio, an organization dedicated to promoting dog adoption, spay/neuter programming, pet retention and education, has sculpted a collaboration of local foundations, dog rescue organizations, artists and dogs themselves to create a unique collection of abstract artwork. The culmination is the creation of colorful splatter paintings, canvases and framed photographs which will be auctioned during “SHAKE! Art Unleashed,” on Saturday, September 17 at the Canton Cultural Center for the Arts.

To create the collection, rescued dogs were covered in pet safe paint, and as wet dogs do, the artists shook themselves silly, spraying nearby canvases with color. Each of the nine featured canine Picassos adopted their own combination of colors using an edible paint made of cornstarch and food coloring that was developed exclusively for the project. The result is a series of paintings as random and as beautiful as each adopted dog.  This project was supported by a micro-grant from ArtsinStark allowing photographer David Baio to catch the painted dogs on camera, creating a second work of art.

Christian Harwell of Cyrus Framing has generously framed and matted many of the photographs of our pint-sized Jackson Pollock’s at work to be used at exhibits and the September event.

David Baio, featured (human) ArtsinStark artist, is a versatile and seasoned professional photographer, videographer and dog lover. David is not only skilled in portrait and commercial photography, but manages his own photography studio. “David is a dog advocate who graciously and patiently allowed our artists to create their art in his studio. We originally thought the canvases would be the stars of the show, but David’s photographs are stunning — the result of his work is astonishing. When we added fellow dog lover, Christian Harwell’s, custom framing to David’s images, we realized that the photographs alongside the canvases truly complete the collection. They really are beautiful beyond our wildest dreams,” explained Jennifer Harrington, director of Pawsitive Ohio.

The goal of “SHAKE!” is both to raise funds and to raise awareness of the homeless pet population locally in Stark County while showcasing the stories of our “artists” and the organizations who helped them find homes. The community will be encouraged to learn about options available in Stark County for adopting and will be presented with information about spay/neuter programs. All funds raised will help Pawsitive Ohio to continue its mission of creating a community where no dog needs to die in a shelter simply for being unwanted.

Tickets for “SHAKE! Art Unleashed.” are available at www.pawsitiveohio.org/shake. The September 17 event will invite attendees to explore the unique artwork collection while enjoying an upscale evening of top-shelf beverages, heavy hors d’oeuvres, music, and live and silent auctions.

The event is possible with the support of our generous sponsors including Cyrus Framing, the Deubel Foundation, H-P Products, Inc. J&K Printing and Julz by Alan Rodriguez. Pawsitive Ohio offers special thanks to the selfless organizations who provided shelter for our artists until they found their forever homes including the Stark County Dog Warden, Canine Lifeline, Save-a-Mom Pregnant Dog Rescue, the Tuscarawas Humane Society, Second Chance for Animals, Buckeye Bulldog Rescue and PAWSibilities®, Humane Society of Greater Akron, as well as to our artist’s wonderful families.

By celebrating shelter diversity and focusing on finding unique ways for rescue organizations to support each other, Pawsitive Ohio serves as a positive and proactive medium towards our common objectives.
