Gershwin and Bernstein on All American Program

The Canton Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the American spirit with a program of works composed in the United States including George Gershwin’s An American in Parisand Leonard Bernstein’s On the Waterfront: Symphonic Suite.  The “All American” concert October 29, 2016 at 8:00pm at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall at the Zimmermann Symphony Center also features violin soloist Jinjoo Cho.  The concert is sponsored in part by Danbury Senior Living.

Gershwin’s An American in Paris was met with great public enthusiasm when it debuted in 1928 and became the inspiration behind the 1951 Academy Award winning film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron.  Bernstein wrote the score for another Academy Award winning movie, On the Waterfront, and later arranged a symphonic suite of music from the score.  Since their film successes, both works have become very popular with concert hall audiences.

The concert will open with Victor Herbert’s American Fantasy (or Fantasia).  In a letter published in The  Canton Repository on July 10, 2016, M. J. Albacete, adjunct professor at Kent State University at Stark and executive director emeritus of the Canton Museum of Art, wroteHerbert, a naturalized U.S. citizen, wrote the piece in 1893, incorporating settings of several American tunes most of us older citizens know and love, among them Hail to the Chief, Old Folks at Home, Dixie Land and Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean, ending as we should expect with a rousing orchestration of The Star Spangled Banner.”

Jinjoo Cho, dviolin alumnus of the Canton Symphony Orchestra and winner of the International Violin Competition in Indianapolis, will perform Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s ravishing Violin Concerto in D Major.  Jinjoo made her first appearance on the international music scene when she garnered the First Grand Prize and Radio Canada’s People’s Choice Award at the 2006 Montreal International Musical Competition at age 17.  She has concertized throughout North and South America, Asia, and Europe, performing as a soloist with such prestigious orchestras as The Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (Argentina) among many others.  Jinjoo’s biggest passion is arts education and audience engagement.  As a result, she is the founder of a new chamber music program for high school and college students in Cleveland, Ohio named the Encore Chamber Music Institute.  The institute had its inaugural season this summer.  Additionally, Jinjoo was just appointed to the part-time faculty of Oberlin Conservatory teaching violin and coaching chamber music.
